Arabica coffee beans were first grown in Hawaii in the mid 19th century when the governor of Oahu, Chief Boki, brought some Arabica coffee plants to Hawaii from Brazil. It was soon discovered that the coffee plants thrived in the growing conditions of the Kona region of Hawaii due to its steep volcanic slopes and regular rainfall. Over the next 150 years Kona coffees became some of the most popular and desired coffees in the world. The wonderful flavor of Kona coffees is due not only to the superior environmental conditions that characterize the Kona region, it is also due to the care that is taken in the harvesting of Kona coffee beans. The vast majority of the coffee beans from Kona are grown on independent farms. There, the premium Arabica beans grown in Kona are hand picked and processed with the utmost of care.
